Basic Statistics — Study Materials and Practice Quiz

Some of the students in my marketing research class are a little rusty on inferential statistics. For most students, it’s something they’ve mastered in the past, but without practice it’s easy to forget the answers to questions like these:

  • What is the difference between a standard error and a standard deviation?
  • How should you interpret a histogram?
  • How can you tell whether a variable is binomial or multinomial?

To remind students about these concepts, I give my marketing research students a quiz on basic statistics. To help students prepare for the quiz,

I have created a practice quiz and these study materials. There is no shortage of coverage of these topics on the Internet, but it can be challenging for students to find a source that is trustworthy while not going far deeper into the concept than is really necessary for a marketing research class. For example, I don’t need my students to memorize the different formulas for calculating a standard deviation from a sample; I only need them to truly understand what a standard deviation means, and how it’s different from related concepts like standard error. Therefore, I created these materials for my students as a study guide.
